RED and WHITE KITTEN

So...Last year I started working on a painting inspired by a golden kitten that was in the adoption program at Safe Haven for Cats in 2008. Shoebox was his name and he had the biggest Golden eyes that I have ever seen. I abandoned that painting...Somehow the image that I had in my head did not translate well to the canvas. If you look at the bottom image you can sort of see that the colors and layout was very BLAHHHH.

Last night while rearranging my studio I found that canvas and decided to rework it. Looking for inspiration from my red and white boy "Mr. Biggelsworth", I added white marking to this kitten and totally took away the blueish background. Now the paintings seems united and kitten pops right at you!

Biggs - Work in Progress

It has been a while since I painted Mr.Biggelsworth (aka Biggs) - I looked at his picture that always hangs in my studio and knew that it was time for another creation. He really was an incredible, once in a lifetime cat and a day doesn't go by that I don't miss him terribly.

This is still very much work in progress. I just figured that it would be fun to share my painting process.

This is done on a 16x20 stretched canvas that was first primed with grey gessoe.

I used a viewfinder to decide on an interesting cropping and then used a soft pastel to roughly sketch out the boy. The three photos show the progression of the paint application. With Biggsy, I normally let my heart do the painting - and once the basic shapes are laid out, I barely ever look at the photo...

Here comes Nacho!!!

Didn't I say this little man was the CUTEST!!!. This is Nacho (a.k.a. Chero). He is a 5 year old Devon Rex with the softest curls ever. I submitted his photo to James Parker's Windows to the Words blog and it was one of the 4 photos that was picked for this month painting assignment. To visit his Blog click HERE

Biggelsworth

It's been a little over 3 years since my Biggsy passed away. A day doesn't go by that I don't miss that big little man. He was a "once in a lifetime" kid. I was going through some old photos that were stashed away in some shoe boxes an found a photo of him as a 6 mos old little rascal. Here is a headshot showing off his gorgeous orange coat an bright green eyes.
